CORNELIUS APPLEJACK: Apple Scrumpy

Pinky Mixology Presents: Applejack-Off 2014
Focus on CORNELIUS APPLEJACK:
Harvest Farm Distillery's Ice-Distilled Scrumpy Applejack.

"Freeze-Distilling" is the traditional method of creating applejack, and Harvest Spirits has employed some modern technology to create an applejack in that old tradition.  And remember, this kind of thing should be left to the pros.

Dubbed their "Scrumpy,"  this applejack is super sweet due to the concentration of sugars, and packed with apple flavor.

The sad part is, that although it's really good, it's (currently) only available as samples from their tasting room up in Valatie, N.Y.  So we went there to try some of this stuff out.

Cider donuts, apple cider, and other goodies are available from Golden Harvest Farms at the same location as the distillery.

The distillation and storage takes place in the same facilities, where the applejack is stored for about 2 years in 53-gallon sized barrels that were previously used by Jack Daniels (as you can see in our previous post).  Although it is sometimes "quarter cask finished," in this case, the bottle you will see us use, has not gone through that finishing process.

We have no idea if they will be able to make it commercially available, but we hope to be able to enjoy it or something like it from Harvest Spirits in the future.

So we did indeed ask about the concentration of the nasty hangover-causing chemicals that accompany fermented drinks that are freeze-distilled, and we were told that yep, they're in there, so don't overdo the stuff.   Don't say we didn't warn you.

Next up, we get creative with Cornelius Applejack, which is something so famous, you can even purchase it online.
